For a very long time, many businesses around the world have used WeChat as their main platform of choice when it comes to promoting and communicating with Chinese consumers. However, as the years went by, more and more platforms have come out such as XiaoHongShu, Weibo, and Douyin (to name a few), and have raised in popularity with users. This resulted in WeChat having to come up with innovative ideas to keep users on their platform.
So, what has WeChat done to keep up with the trend? They came out with WeChat Channels which the beta was launched in early 2020. The launch of WeChat Channels has allowed WeChat users to spend more time on the app, thus giving businesses another tool to communicate to WeChat users around the globe.
What are WeChat Channels?
WeChat Channels is essentially a “public channel” page that allows WeChat users (and businesses) to create short videos or pictures and share them on their own WeChat Channel page.
Other users can also discover a wide variety of content posted by other users via the WeChat Channels feed section. You can think of WeChat Channels as an integrated DouYin (TikTok) into WeChat.
For every WeChat post, users can:
- Add multiple hashtags
- Add a location tag
- A short description
- Add a WeChat Official account article link
Here is an example of a WeChat channel that belongs to the Beijing Olympics 2022 Gold medal winner Yiming Su.
This new feature gives users and official accounts a new way to increase exposure with WeChat users. With the right strategy and content in place, businesses can especially utilise WeChat Channels to attract their desired Chinese target audience.
